How one year of PSEO computer science credits was checked against three Minnesota programs

This is an illustrative example, not a client. The student is invented. Every course number, requirement, deadline, and dollar figure below was read off a published page in September 2026 and is cited at the end.

A Minnesota family arrived in the spring of 11th grade, which leaves two PSEO terms rather than four. Two terms is enough to matter in computing, provided the courses are chosen against a receiving college’s own sequence rather than against a general idea of what a first programming course is. The University of Minnesota and Minnesota State Mankato each require a discrete mathematics course by name and each start programming from a course number Normandale does not share, and Winona State publishes its requirements in a catalog that would not open to a public reader.

Situation

Priya is an 11th grader at a public high school in the south metro with a 3.8 unweighted grade point average. She has taught herself enough Python to build things that run and has never taken a graded computer science course. She finishes precalculus this spring, which puts calculus within reach in 12th grade. She is on the robotics team, and the season runs January to April.

Her parents wanted both senior terms filled with programming, five courses and nothing else, on the reasoning that programming is the work. They also asked whether an associate degree could still be finished in the year that is left.

Goal

A bachelor’s degree in computer science with as little borrowing as the family can manage, and a 12th grade that does not become a second full-time job on top of a first one.

Colleges considered

University of Minnesota Twin Cities, computer science
Students apply to the major after they arrive, in a window that opens March 1 and closes December 30 for spring or March 1 to May 25 for fall. The application asks for two semesters of calculus, a first programming course from CSCI 1133, 1103, 1113 or 1901, a second from CSCI 1933, 1913 or 1902, and CSCI 2011, each at C- or better. A 3.2 technical grade point average guarantees a fall admission, and the department reports that nearly 90 percent of applicants were admitted in recent cycles. The technical average uses Twin Cities grades only, and the department states that courses taken at other institutions may fulfill degree requirements without being counted in it.
Minnesota State University, Mankato
The computer science degree is 76 major credits inside 120. The lower-division courses are CIS 121 Introduction to Programming, CIS 122 Data Structures, CIS 223 Algorithms, CIS 224 Computer Architecture, MATH 247 Linear Algebra and MATH 280 Discrete Mathematics for Computer Science, at four credits each, alongside MATH 121 and MATH 122 for calculus and ENG 101 for writing. Moving into upper-division courses takes a separate application with an essay and a recommendation letter, ENG 101, CIS 223, CIS 224 and MATH 280 at C or better, and a 2.5 average across the lower-division mathematics and computing courses.
Winona State University
Lists the computer science degree as a Transfer Pathway program of 68 to 69 major credits inside 120, taught on the Winona campus and in Rochester. The course-level requirements sit in a catalog that returned a challenge page rather than a course list to a public reader in September 2026, so nothing in this study is claimed against Winona State course by course. The Transfer Pathway designation is published on the program page itself and is the piece that changes this plan.

The problem

Five programming courses in two terms was never available, and the obstacle is a prerequisite chain rather than a judgment about how much Priya can carry. Normandale’s CSCI 1111 requires CSCI 1101. CSCI 2001 requires CSCI 1101 with MATH 1510 taken first or alongside. CSCI 2002 requires both CSCI 1111 and CSCI 2001. Starting from no graded computer science in September of 12th grade, the deepest a student reaches by May is the third link.

The numbering is the part that costs families credits. The University of Minnesota begins at CSCI 1133 and continues at CSCI 1933. Mankato begins at CIS 121 and continues at CIS 122. Normandale begins at CSCI 1101, a course whose own description has students writing simple programs in one or more languages, reaches Python at CSCI 2001 and Java at CSCI 2002. Whether a course lands as its own number or as elective credit turns on the language, the credit count and the position in the sequence, and no page at any of these three colleges settles that in advance.

The associate degree the family asked about is real and it is a year too big. Normandale’s Computer Science Transfer Pathway is a 60-credit Associate of Science with a 28-credit core of CSCI 1101, 1111, 2001, 2002 and 2021, plus discrete structures and one of three further courses. Finishing it guarantees junior-year standing at seven Minnesota State universities, Mankato and Winona State among them. Twenty-one credits is a third of that, which makes the degree a plan for the year after graduation.

Our analysis

The overlap between the three programs is narrow and easy to name once the lists are open. Discrete mathematics appears on the University of Minnesota list as CSCI 2011 and on the Mankato list as MATH 280, and it is an admission requirement at both. Two semesters of calculus appear on both. A writing course appears on both. Everything else in the first two years belongs to one college’s own sequence.

Normandale numbers its discrete structures course CSCI 2011 and titles it Discrete Structures of Computer Science, which is the number and the title the University of Minnesota uses for the course on its own application list. That is a strong lead and it is not a ruling, so the roadmap carries it as not yet verified. The same applies to Normandale’s CSCI 1113, titled Intro to C/C++ for Engineers, against the CSCI 1113 that sits on the University of Minnesota first-course list.

Discrete structures also does something a programming course cannot. It carries Goal Area 4 of the Minnesota Transfer Curriculum, the mathematical and logical reasoning requirement, so a course that answers an admission rule at two universities also closes a general education slot at every public college in the state. Calculus 1 carries the same goal area, which means one of the two does double duty and the other does single, and knowing which is which is the difference between a 60-credit plan and a 72-credit one.

Priya’s head start was the thing this plan deliberately did not build on. Self-taught Python is a good reason to expect a strong grade in the first two courses and a poor reason to skip them, because those grades are what the University of Minnesota reads in January and again in May of 12th grade before it confirms an admission offer.

Minnesota does have tools for this and families should use them. Transferology is free, needs an account, carries information from more than 400 institutions in 39 states, and shows how one course might transfer to one college. Mankato is careful in print about what a miss means: no exact match is not the same as no credit, and transfer work is reviewed by the university and an academic adviser before it applies to a program requirement. Underneath all of it sits the Minnesota Transfer Curriculum, a 40-credit package across ten goal areas that moves as a whole between public Minnesota colleges, and it is the one part of this plan nobody has to verify course by course.

The path

  • Five courses at Normandale Community College across the two terms of 12th grade, 21 credits.
  • CSCI 1101 Introduction to Computing and Problem Solving with MATH 1510 Calculus 1 in the fall, nine credits, because every other course in the plan depends on one or the other.
  • CSCI 1111 Introduction to Programming in C, CSCI 2011 Discrete Structures of Computer Science and ENGC 1101 College Writing in the spring, twelve credits, the heaviest term Priya will have carried.
  • Robotics season kept, with the family deciding that in front of the spring term rather than after registration closed.
  • CSCI 2001 and CSCI 2002 left for the summer after graduation or the first term at whichever college she picks, where the Python course and the Java course can be matched to that college’s sequence instead of guessed at.
  • The Computer Science Transfer Pathway associate degree kept on the table as a plan for the year after high school rather than for two terms, if Mankato or Winona State turns out to be the answer.
  • The intent-to-enroll notice filed with the school district by May 30 for the fall term and October 30 for the spring term.

The outcome

Sorted against what each university publishes, the 21 credits come out like this. Two of the five courses answer a named admission requirement at both the University of Minnesota and Mankato: discrete structures and calculus. College Writing answers Mankato’s ENG 101 and closes Goal Area 1 of the Minnesota Transfer Curriculum alongside a second communication course later. The two programming courses answer neither university’s admission list by number, and they are the courses that make the other three possible.

Against Winona State nothing is claimed. The program page gives 68 to 69 major credits, a 120-credit degree and a Transfer Pathway designation, and the catalog behind it stayed shut.

The five-programming-course plan runs into CSCI 2002, which requires both CSCI 1111 and CSCI 2001 and cannot be reached inside two terms. It would also have left out calculus and writing, which are the two courses on this list that both universities name.

Savings

At the rate Normandale published for 2026-27, $193.92 a credit in tuition and $34.68 a credit in fees, 21 credits is $4,801 for a Minnesota resident taking the courses on campus. None of that reaches the family, because the PSEO statute bars the college from charging the student for tuition, fees, textbooks, materials or support services.

What the credits are worth at the other end is smaller than the tuition figure and harder to pin down, so it is reported here in courses. Two of the five answer an admission requirement at two universities, which is worth a term of a degree if both equivalences hold and worth elective credit if they do not, and neither has been confirmed by anything beyond a matching course number. That went to the family as an evening of work on Transferology rather than as a dollar figure in a roadmap.

The clearer saving is the shape of the year. Four courses came out of the plan the family walked in with, one of which Priya could not have taken at all, and what is left is nine credits in the fall and twelve in the spring with a robotics season inside it.

Lessons

  • Two terms of PSEO is a real amount of college and it is not an associate degree. Decide which one a family is buying before the first registration window opens.
  • Look up the receiving college’s first course number before choosing a first course. Computing programs number their entry points differently, and a course teaching the same ideas in another language can still arrive as elective credit.
  • Discrete mathematics is the course that travels furthest. It is an admission requirement for the major at two of these three universities and it fills a Minnesota Transfer Curriculum goal area at all of them.
  • A matching course number is a lead rather than a ruling. Write the equivalence down as unverified and check it in Transferology, which is free and takes an evening.
  • A college whose catalog will not open to the public is a phone call, and the call belongs in 11th grade rather than in the summer after graduation.
