Dual enrollment at Chaffey College, explained for parents

Which Chaffey track is your teen eligible for?

Chaffey builds both of its dual enrollment tracks on Assembly Bill 288, the College and Career Access Pathways act, and both are open to students from incoming ninth grade through twelfth. The difference is your address. High School Partnership serves students from four districts and select charter schools. High School Partnership FLEX takes high school students from anywhere in California.

The partner districts are Chaffey Joint Union, covering Alta Loma, Chaffey, Chaffey Online and Valley View, Colony, Etiwanda, Los Osos, Montclair, Ontario, and Rancho Cucamonga high schools; Chino Valley Unified, covering Ayala, Chino, Chino Hills, and Don Lugo; Fontana Unified, covering AB Miller, Fontana, Jurupa Hills, Kaiser, and Summit; and Upland Unified, covering Upland High. The charter list names Entrepreneur Charter High in Fontana, Excelsior Charter in Ontario, Learn 4 Life, and Options for Youth.

If that list includes your teen's school, the partnership track is worth the effort of getting on it, because it is the version where the college pays for the books. If it does not, FLEX is a genuine option rather than a consolation, and a family in Riverside or Los Angeles County can use it from home.

We check which section a course is listed under before a family celebrates a free class, because the same subject can appear on both tracks in the same term with a different bill attached.

What does it cost?

High School Partnership courses cost nothing. Chaffey covers tuition, college service fees, and textbook rental for students registered in an HSP section, with the fees waived before the term starts. That last piece is rarer than it sounds, because most California colleges waive the enrollment fee and hand the textbook bill to the family.

HSP FLEX waives tuition and charges $15 to $20 in college service fees, and the student pays for textbooks, licenses, and course materials. Two courses a term across four terms puts the fee side at somewhere near $150 over two years, which is small against the tuition being waived and large enough that a family should know it is coming.

One transport cost is published and it is small. Chaffey lists the Omnitrans Go Smart Program at $8 for a part-time student, which is worth knowing for a teen taking an on-campus section in Rancho Cucamonga without a driver in the household.

How many units, and what happens past eleven?

Eleven units in fall, eleven in spring, and eleven in summer. Chaffey applies the same ceiling across all three terms, which is more summer room than most colleges allow and a reason to look at summer seriously rather than treat it as an afterthought.

Registering for 12 or more units is possible and expensive. A student has to complete the appeals process and then becomes responsible for the full cost of tuition, textbooks, and college service fees, so the twelfth unit converts a free schedule into a paid one. The appeal has its own window, which for the fall term ran from April 21 to September 26.

The first day is a hard gate on both tracks. Chaffey tells students to log into Canvas and complete the first assignment on day one or risk being dropped, and a dropped seat in a partnership section is not easy to get back once the term has started.

What are the deadlines, and how do we apply?

The two tracks differ in who does the registering, and that changes what a family has to watch. On the partnership track the student submits the HSP course request form electronically to the high school for approval, and Chaffey's Admissions and Records office registers the student in every approved course. There is no self-registration and no registration appointment to miss.

On FLEX the student gets a Chaffey College ID, submits the HSP FLEX course request form to the high school for approval, waits up to three business days for Admissions and Records to process it, receives an email when the approved courses are cleared, and then self-registers on an assigned registration date. The cleared list is what the student can register for, so a backup course belongs on the form the first time.

Chaffey publishes a window for each term rather than a single deadline. For the partnership track, summer enrollment ran March 16 to April 24 with classes starting June 1, and fall enrollment ran April 15 to October 16 with registration confirmed on September 8. On FLEX, the spring course request period ran October 20 to March 16 and the summer period March 30 to June 12. Registration confirmation on the partnership track takes five to seven business days after the form is complete.

Where does Chaffey credit count?

ASSIST is the official repository of articulation for California's colleges and universities, and Chaffey describes it as the system that shows how course credits move between California colleges. The distinction worth carrying into it is between a course that transfers, meaning the university grants units, and a course that is articulated, meaning it satisfies a named requirement in a named major. A parent checking one course against one campus gets an answer in about a minute.

The general education pattern changed on a date worth writing down, and Chaffey's transfer steps page has not caught up. The change took effect with the fall 2025 term: from then on Cal-GETC replaced IGETC and CSU GE Breadth for every student starting at a California community college, which is every teen beginning dual enrollment now. The steps page still describes IGETC and CSU GE Breadth as the two options, so ask the Transfer Center which pattern the record is on before treating a published course list as current.

The associate degree is the anchor. Chaffey states that on successful completion of an Associate Degree for Transfer a student is guaranteed admission into the CSU system in a similar major, though not necessarily to a particular campus. The arithmetic behind it is 60 semester units at Chaffey and another 60 at the university, which is where the Finish-In-4 agreement with Cal State San Bernardino comes from: the degree in two years at Chaffey and the bachelor's in two more at CSUSB, available on ten named ADT programs.

The general transfer bars are published and lower than families expect. A CSU asks 60 transferable semester units and a 2.0 GPA, or 2.4 for a California non-resident. A UC asks 60 units for junior standing and a 2.4 GPA, or 2.8 for a non-resident. Both systems count a maximum of 70 transferable semester units toward graduation, which is the one number that argues against stacking dual enrollment credit without a plan for it.

Six UC campuses offer a Transfer Admission Guarantee through Chaffey: Davis, Irvine, Merced, Riverside, Santa Barbara, and Santa Cruz. The filing periods are September 1 to 30 for fall admission and May 1 to 31 for winter or spring. Outside the public systems Chaffey has signed its own agreements: Arizona State at 24 transferable units with a 3.0 or an associate degree with a 2.5, Northern Arizona at 2.5 on transfer coursework or 2.0 with an associate degree, the University of La Verne at 28 transferable units with a 2.7 and college-level English, the University of Redlands School of Business at 21 units with a 2.0 and a ten percent tuition discount, California Baptist, National University, and 39 historically Black colleges and universities at a transfer-level associate degree with a 2.5.

Private and out-of-state universities with no agreement decide course by course, and they usually decide after an application rather than before. A family aiming there should write to that admissions office while the schedule is still a draft. The units earned at Chaffey stay on a Chaffey transcript either way, which is what makes the associate degree worth finishing even when the four-year plan changes.

Bring these to the college's dual enrollment office and to the high school counselor. The answers decide most of the plan.
